Innovative Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Deployment at Iberostar Hotel Sets Industry Benchmark
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and Redexis have jointly launched Spains first green hydrogen fuel cell installation at a hotel, marking a significant milestone in energy innovation within the hospitality industry.
This pioneering project is located at the Iberostar Waves Bahia de Palma in Mallorca. It exemplifies the strategic shift towards more efficient operational models with reduced environmental footprints, reinforcing commitments to sustainability.
The installation enables the hotel to generate both thermal and electrical energy with minimal emissions by utilising renewable hydrogen produced from solar photovoltaic energy sourced from the Lloseta plant, developed by Acciona Energia and Enagas Renovable.
Through this technology, the hotel will consume at least 8 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This covers approximately 70 percent of its thermal energy requirements and over 20 percent of its electrical consumption, significantly decreasing its dependence on fossil fuels.
The move contributes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and optimising the energy system efficiency of the hotel. Furthermore, the establishment now operates with 100 percent renewable electricity, a goal achieved across all Iberostar hotels in Spain since 2024.
This initiative aligns with Iberostars decarbonisation roadmap targeting carbon neutrality by 2030. It highlights the companys dedication to responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, and technological innovation to mitigate sector impacts.
The venture is part of the European Green Hysland project, led by Enagas Renovable, which includes the Lloseta hydrogen production plant and Spains first green hydrogen pipeline, supporting a comprehensive renewable hydrogen value chain in Mallorca with over 10 million euros in funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
As part of Iberostars Wave of Change movement, the company integrates sustainability into its business model. Its climate strategy encompasses sourcing renewable energy, gradual electrification, energy efficiency improvements, and incorporating innovative technologies in hotel operations.
By utilising green hydrogen fuel cells at its Mallorca hotel, Iberostar demonstrates the potential of hydrogen technologies to significantly reduce operational emissions while setting a replicable example for the hospitality sector and beyond
