Spanish Gas Association Sees Positive Momentum in Biometano Royal Decree Initiative
The Spanish Gas Association Sedigass has described the proposed Royal Decree to promote biometano as a significant positive step forward. The initiative includes the implementation of a progressively increasing quota system for biometano in natural gas consumption until 2035, which is expected to stimulate investment and optimise Spains biogas production potential.
During the Annual Sedigas Meeting, the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, announced that the regulatory proposal marks progress in developing renewable gases. Sedigas s president, Joan Batalla, highlighted that the plan recognises opportunities for enhancing energy independence, advancing decarbonisation, supporting circular economy models through waste valorisation, and creating jobs in rural contexts.
The regulation requires gas suppliers and direct consumers to gradually increase their minimum biometano share, starting at 0.5 per cent in 2028 and reaching 6 per cent by 2035. The quota will be maintained at this level unless new targets are established. Certain exceptions are included, and the measures aim to integrate renewable gases more effectively into existing infrastructure.
Sedigass emphasised that the regulatory framework will provide the sector with increased predictability, encouraging investment in new biometano projects.
