Nortegas appoints Antonio Nievas to lead Biometano for Strategic Renewable Gas Expansion
Nortegas has announced the appointment of Antonio Nievas Guadix as the new Chief Executive Officer of its Biometano Business Unit and a member of the Groups executive committee. The strategic move aims to strengthen Nortegass leadership in renewable gases, positioning the company as a key player in Spains clean energy transition.
Nievas brings over twenty years of international experience in managing renewable energy infrastructure and projects across Europe and the Americas. He has a distinguished background in engineering, with advanced degrees in Civil Engineering, Finance, and Renewable Energy Investment, complemented by executive training from IESE Business School. His expertise spans energy infrastructure development, project optimisation, and market regulation.
In his new role, Nievas will oversee the development and long-term operation of Nortegass Biometano portfolio, focused on constructing and managing biogas plants. Under his leadership, Nortegas aims to activate over 3.5 TWh of green gas annually, reinforcing its status as a prominent operator in the Spanish renewable gases market.
Senior executives at Nortegas emphasise that this strategic appointment underscores the companys commitment to advancing renewable gases, especially biometano, as a vital component of the national energy infrastructure. The company sees biometano not only as a decarbonisation solution but also as an environmentally sustainable method for organic waste treatment and valorisation.
Antonio Nievas expressed his enthusiasm for joining Nortegas at a pivotal moment in the energy sector. He underscored his dedication to scaling up biometano production capacity, supporting the injection into the national gas grid, and contributing to the firms goal of becoming a leader in renewable gases. His leadership is expected to accelerate the deployment of new biogas plants, promoting energy resilience and sustainability.
The appointment aligns with Nortegass broader strategy to lead Spains transition towards greener energy sources through the utilisation of renewable gases such as biometano and green hydrogen. The firm aims to reach an injection capacity of 3.5 TWh per year, providing an affordable, circular solution for decarbonising domestic and industrial energy consumption while addressing organic waste management challenges nationwide.
Industry analysts view this move as a significant step forward in Spains renewable gases sector, with Nortegas positioning itself as a frontline operator capable of facilitating the countries climate commitments and energy transition goals. The focus on expanding biometano infrastructure is seen as essential for deepening decarbonisation efforts across sectors reliant on natural gas.
