Sungrow Develops 342 MW Portfolio of Energy Storage Projects in Spain for Grid Flexibility

Sungrow Renewables has announced the development of a portfolio of energy storage projects totalling nearly 342 megawatts of installed capacity across Spain. The projects are located in the regions of Valencia, Galicia, Navarra, and Andalusia, reflecting its strategic expansion in key Spanish markets.

Specifically, the portfolio includes the BESS Cuevas, ALM Vadux Solar, and ALM Julben Solar projects in La Vall d Uixó in Castellon; BESS Santiago in Lousame in A Coruna; BESS Berja in Almeria; and BESS Eunate and BESS Cordovilla in Navarra. These projects are part of Sungrows wider strategy to bolster grid flexibility and support renewable energy integration within the Spanish electricity system.

Operated by the Sungrow Power Supply Group, these facilities are connected to critical substations within Spain's high-voltage transmission network managed by Red Electrica. Their operational aim is to improve system resilience by storing excess renewable energy during peak generation and releasing it when demand increases, thus enhancing overall grid stability.

The combined capacity of these energy storage solutions exceeds 330 MW for both generation and consumption. This allows for the efficient utilisation of renewable resources by capturing surplus power during high production periods and returning it to the system during peak demand, consequently increasing energy resource utilisation and system resilience.

An important aspect of this portfolio is the optimisation of evacuation infrastructure. In La Vall d Uixó, three projects - BESS Cuevas 55 MW, ALM Vadux Solar 55 MW, and ALM Julben Solar 61.5 MW - will share a common collector substation and connect to the Vall d Uixó 220 kV substation operated by Red Electrica. This approach enhances network efficiency and reduces the need for additional infrastructure investments.

These three Castellon projects together constitute the largest energy storage deployment currently under development in Spain, with a combined installed capacity of 171.5 MW and an energy storage capacity of 726.4 MWh. Such scale positions the projects as a significant contributor to the countrys clean energy transition.

Daniel Sanchez, CEO of Sungrow Renewables in Western Europe, highlighted that the Castellon projects represent a long-term commitment to developing advanced energy infrastructure in the region. He emphasised that these facilities will support renewable capacity integration and serve as strategic investments in storage technologies vital for ensuring energy security and system competitiveness in future years.

Beyond Castellon, Sungrow tailors its solutions to local grid conditions. For example, the BESS Santiago 49.9 MW will connect to the Lousame 220 kV substation via shared infrastructure, while BESS Berja 30 MW and BESS Eunate 40 MW will connect through dedicated substations at Berja and Olite, respectively. Additionally, the BESS Cordovilla 49.9 MW will feature its own collector substation to connect directly to the Cordovilla 220 kV system, reflecting customised infrastructure to meet regional demands.
