Post-Blackout Surge in Industrial Battery Adoption Boosts Energy Security in Spain

The significant electrical blackout that impacted the Iberian Peninsula in April 2025 has profoundly altered the energy approach of many Spanish enterprises.

Concern over maintaining reliable power supply and avoiding future disruptions has driven a remarkable 75 percent increase in demand for industrial battery storage systems over two years, according to an analysis by the specialised company and Tú Solar.

Once considered an investment primarily for large-scale industries, energy storage is now becoming a core component of energy efficiency projects for a broader range of organisations. This shift was precipitated by the blackout that caused losses exceeding one billion euros and highlighted the fragility of many firms supply continuity.

The study examines over 200 industrial projects carried out between 2023 and 2025, showing a profound evolution in the market. Two years ago, only 25 percent of enquiries involved battery installation, whereas by 2025, this figure had risen to 75 percent, now approaching almost 100 percent. Furthermore, three out of ten recent installations by the company already incorporate storage systems.

Ensuring supply continuity is now the primary driver behind the adoption of energy storage solutions. The report states that 74 percent of analysed organisations cite protection against blackouts and micro-cuts as the main reason for installing batteries.

Additionally, 61 percent aim to reduce contracted power, and 48 percent seek to optimise utilisation of surplus solar photovoltaic generation. These motives reflect a strategic shift towards resilient and cost-effective energy management.

Concurrently, costs of technology have dropped sharply. Lithium ferro-phosphate batteries, predominantly used in industrial applications, have fallen by approximately 45 percent, from around 450 euros per kilowatt-hour in 2022 to approximately 187 euros today.

This price decrease has rendered many projects previously unviable now economically attractive, with shorter return periods. Industry leader Ignacio Ley from Tú Solar highlights that the blackout acted as a catalyst, accelerating a trend already underway in the sector.

He explains that technological cost reductions, supply security needs, and the opportunity to cut electricity bills have collectively positioned energy storage as a strategic element for industry.

The shift reflects changing priorities among Spanish companies, which now seek not only to reduce energy consumption through solar self-generation but also to ensure operational continuity and maximise energy use from their own assets.

Overall, the increased adoption of industrial batteries signals a strategic realignment driven by energy security concerns, technological advances, and economic viability in the wake of recent grid disruptions.
