ContourGlobal Secures 3 GWh Battery Supply from CATL for International Energy Storage Projects
ContourGlobal has successfully finalised its first large-scale battery supply agreement with the Chinese manufacturer CATL involving a total of 3 gigawatt-hours GWh of capacity. This contract will supply batteries to three energy storage projects located in the United Kingdom Greece and Chile. The strategic partnership aims to unify international expansion plans under a standardised technological platform facilitating operational consistency and scalability across multiple markets
The order comprises 526 battery containers each with a capacity of 5.64 megawatt-hours MWh and designed for four hours of autonomous operation. These batteries are built using large-format lithium iron phosphate LFP cells equipped with liquid cooling systems fire detection and extinguishing systems to enhance safety and operational reliability. Such features are crucial for ensuring security during long-term deployment and high-demand scenarios
The largest project in the portfolio is Wallace a 500 MW / 2000 MWh standalone facility in Scotland that marks ContourGlobals entry into the UK market. It is followed by Taxiarches in Greece with a 100 MW / 400 MWh configuration and Los Maitenes in Chile which combines 131 MWp of solar generation with 90 MW / 360 MWh of battery storage. While the Greek and Chilean projects are already under construction the Scottish project is in a more advanced development phase indicating a rapid progress trajectory
According to Antonio Cammisecra Chief Executive of ContourGlobal the agreement goes beyond mere equipment procurement. It establishes uniform technical standards for engineering testing and asset management across different countries reducing logistical and delivery risks. This approach is expected to make business growth in battery storage more scalable by promoting standardisation and efficiency. From CATLs perspective LB Tan emphasised that the collaboration merges CATLs advanced battery technology with ContourGlobals regional infrastructure expertise thereby reinforcing the strategic partnership
The batteries supplied by CATL will include innovative features to monitor cell wear and degradation extending their useful life. Future capabilities may include providing grid stability services such as grid-forming functions subject to regulatory approval. CATL also commits to recycling the batteries at the end of their lifecycle supporting environmental sustainability in energy storage initiatives
This deal adds a significant boost to ContourGlobals existing portfolio which already includes approximately 3 GWh of operational storage in Bulgaria Chile and other markets. It also complements a pipeline of 1.6 GW of storage projects in Italy that are not part of this agreement positioning ContourGlobal as a prominent player in the international energy transition and decarbonisation efforts
