Largest Electric Aircraft Achieves Maiden Flight as Industry Moves Towards Sustainable Aviation
The Heart Aerospace X1, recognised as the largest electric aircraft ever to fly, completed its maiden flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York. The aircraft, piloted during the test, remained airborne for 27 minutes, reaching an altitude of 335 metres. Its propulsion system, powered solely by batteries, generated over one megawatt of power during the trial.
With a wingspan of approximately 32 metres, a length of 23 metres and a take-off weight exceeding 11300 kilograms, the test flight encompassed taxiing, take-off, ascent, manoeuvres and landing. The flight was conducted under a special experimental airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration FAA.
Electricity costs during the flight were estimated at around USD 5, compared to the average aviation kerosene price of USD 3.50 per gallon in the previous week, which is 63 percent higher than the previous year. This comparison highlights operational costs, although true airline operating expenses must account for maintenance, crew, airport fees, battery replacements and capital costs.
In essence, the X1 serves as a technological demonstrator, with the commercial successor being the ES-30, a hybrid-electric aircraft with a fixed fuselage and 30 seats. Unlike the headline, the ES-30 will not be entirely electric but will include a combustion engine to extend its range. Heart Aerospace estimates a battery-only range of about 200 kilometres, expandable to 800 kilometres with the auxiliary engine running.
The first pre-production ES-30 is currently under construction at the companies Los Angeles pilot plant, with flight testing scheduled for 2028, FAA Part 25 certification targeted and entry into service planned for 2031. Industry analysts consider this timeline ambitious, reflecting the pace of technological development.
Heart projects the ES-30 could reduce operational costs by up to 40 percent compared to current regional turboprops such as the Embraer ERJ, subject to improvements in environmental regulation and emission taxes. The company originally founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, relocated to Los Angeles in 2025 to gain proximity to US clients and investors. Its commitments include deals worth USD 9.4 billion, subject to certification and commercial success.
Facing an increasingly crowded market of electric and hybrid aviation startups like Boom Supersonic, ZeroAvia and Rolls-Royce, Heart Aerospace anticipates that advances in battery technology — making batteries denser and lighter — are key to long-term success in sustainable aviation. The industry outlook remains optimistic for innovative propulsion solutions contributing to aviation decarbonisation and industry sustainability.
