Maximising Savings on Electricity Costs During the Cheapest Day in Recent History
On Sunday 29 March the average electricity price is forecasted to be as low as 0.18 euros per megawatt hour MWh according to the Iberian Energy Market Operator OMIE. This presents an exceptional opportunity for consumers to optimise their energy use and reduce bills by timing their electricity consumption during peak low-price periods.
The sharp decline in market prices following a relatively inexpensive Saturday highlights the potential for significant cost savings. It is important to note that these market prices do not precisely reflect final electricity bills which include additional charges such as levies and taxes. The prices are determined through auctions based on electricity generation sources influencing the wholesale cost.
Knowing the hours with the minimum prices can allow consumers to plan actions such as operating heavy appliances or charging electric vehicles during the most economical times of the day. The differential in costs across different hours can make a notable difference to the overall electricity expenditure.
On 29 March the lowest prices are expected between 15:00 and 16:00 when the price could reach as low as minus 9.83 euros per MWh. Prices will be negative during most of the day from 08:00 to 18:00 meaning some consumers might even benefit financially by using electricity during this period. Conversely the highest prices are forecast for between 20:00 and 21:00 reaching up to 12.52 euros per MWh.
In practical terms consumers should aim to operate energy-intensive devices such as ovens washing machines or dryers during the early hours after sunrise or during the midday low-price window. This strategic timing can significantly lower bills especially when combined with smart energy management systems. Light usage in peak hours from 19:00 onwards will be less costly than usual but the best savings are clearly within the afternoon low-price valleys.
Overall understanding hourly price fluctuations allows consumers to capitalise on the most affordable periods. With the right planning the notably low electricity rates on 29 March offer an excellent chance to cut costs in a time of rising energy prices globally. Being conscious of these patterns can optimise energy consumption and lead to meaningful savings in energy bills over the month.
