The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to impact global energy markets, heightening concerns over supply security and price volatility. While Spain has thus far remained less affected, the need to safeguard energy supply becomes critical if the conflict prolongs, warns Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Moeve. Spain s competitive industry has benefited from decades of strategic investment, but maintaining supply stability remains vital in the short to medium term.

Wetselaar emphasises that recent geopolitical tensions underline the importance of energy infrastructure development and diversification. He highlights Spain s strategic initiatives, such as the new green hydrogen plant in Huelva, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and address reliance on fossil fuels. This project reflects broader efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources while enhancing energy security.

Furthermore, Moeve is negotiating a potential merger with Galp, envisaging the creation of two major Iberian energy giants specialising in refining and fuel retailing. Wetselaar explains that the merger, targeted for finalisation by year end, seeks to achieve critical scale advantages necessary for industry survival in a rapidly evolving market. The consolidation aligns with wider European energy security and decarbonisation goals.

Wetselaar advocates for increased energy production within Europe, particularly in southern regions, by exploiting solar and wind resources. He stresses that effective organisation and infrastructure are fundamental. Europe's underdeveloped interconnections and limited physical energy reserves pose operational challenges that must be addressed to meet future demand.

He warns that despite lessons learned from the Ukraine crisis, the continent has yet to fully implement necessary infrastructure improvements. This includes enhancing hydrogen networks, expanding renewable energy plants, and streamlining regulatory procedures to facilitate faster deployment.

Europe s path to decarbonisation hinges on securing reliable energy supplies, emphasising the importance of cooperation, infrastructure investment, and policy reform to remain competitive globally. Wetselaar concludes that strategic energy production and infrastructure modernisation will be instrumental in safeguarding Europe s energy future and achieving sustainability goals.
