Germany's Renewable Energy Goals Secure Industry Confidence Amid Transition
The German energy sector expressed strong support for the governments decision to uphold its renewable energy expansion objectives as part of its recently agreed power plant strategy.
Key industry associations, including the Federal Association of Renewable Energies (BEE) and the German Association of Industries for Energy and Water (BDEW), highlighted the importance of clear, sustained commitments to wind and solar energy growth.
According to BEE, the governments dedication to maintaining consistent auction volumes and expansion efforts provides essential investment security. This confidence encourages companies and project developers to continue investing in renewable infrastructure.
Similarly, BDEW emphasized that the decision is vital for advancing Germanys energy transition and recognizing the increasing demand for electricity and ongoing electrification.
The coalition parties agreed to keep auction volumes for renewable sources at ambitious levels, acknowledging that a continuous and strong increase in generation capacity is fundamental for successful decarbonization.
This consensus came after a period of industry uncertainty triggered by a governments energy transition review, which raised concerns about potentially reduced renewable targets.
Despite questions about the pace of expansion, Germany achieved nearly 57 percent renewable share of gross electricity demand in the first three quarters of 2025, aiming for an 80 percent share by 2030.
The country added a record 20 GW of renewable capacity in 2024, primarily solar photovoltaic and onshore wind, demonstrating robust growth. However, to meet the 2030 capacity goals, annual additions must reach approximately 19 GW for solar and 12 GW for wind, including offshore installations.
